Both OMD Pukeko teams finished with a 9-1 win-loss record to be crowned Champions of the Touch Singapore Summer Touch League 2007. The Mixed Pukekos becoming the first back-to-back Champions in the STL. The Pukeko Mens avenged a finals loss in 2006 to regain their Championship status as the best Mens Team in Singapore.
As one of the most competitive touch seasons to date, OMD Pukeko have had a great season with many new players making big contributions. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our Sponsors OMD - Insight Ideas Results! for looking after the Pukekos.

OMD Pukeko Results Round 10

Round 10 saw OMD Pukeko Mixed battle Teh Tarik in a close encounter in the last round of the Summer League. With a very laboured first half the Pukekos went into the second half looking to refocus and re-energise their game. With vigour and passion - Pukekos stormed to score 3 tries within the final 7 minutes to snatch a 7-6 win from the jaws of defeat.
The biggest play coming from Alvinia and Derelyn. With the defense stretched they moved the ball from left to right going through all six players. Derelyn making a superb long pass to Alvinia on the outside and then supporting the inside ball - where Alvinia delivered a superb pass for Derelyn to score under intense defensive pressure. And a huge cheer on the sideline as Alvinia aeroplaned down the field!

Thanks to support from the Pukekos on the sideline cheering the team on and sharing in the victory!

STL Round 7

Both Pukeko teams recorded strong victories in their top of the table clash in round seven of the Singapore Summer Touch League. Not even thunder, lightening, rain or sprained limbs could stop the Pukeko machine from rolling.

OMD Pukeko Men played the 6Pack for the second time - starting off slowly to take the half 2-1.
Tries to Devon and Jonesy from slicing Ben Ting runs. It was a torrid affair with both teams running hard at each other- Defense was tenacious and the sun was beating down like a slab of concrete falling from the sky.
Bao, Bus and Mo contributed immensely to take the team out of the half with some big runs.
Greg would seal the game with an arching run and a try to Jonestown to finish off the scoring 4-3. The mens team is building nicely and confidence is at an all time high.

Pukeko Mixed would run out 7-3 winners over Mixed Rivals Brotown. In a wet weather mud battle Pukekos would run in some awesome individual tries - to Tony Barone, Dan Rubber Man and Laser Lixin.

Haseena shutdown the attacking weapons of Brotown with two huge defensive plays. Again the Pukeko ladies proved to be the difference on D making try saving touches.

STL Weekend Round 5 Recap

OMD Pukekos battled a determined and fast improving Bucks Mens team in round 5 of the STL. Taking the competition points Pukeko avenged their first round loss to the Bucks with an 8-7 win.
Pukeko now move into First equal place with Bucks and look to rack up some tries in the coming weeks as the competition heads into the final stages.
The first half was a try scoring fest with Pukeko taking the half up 6-5. Defense was exposed on the fringes and that was to be remedied in the second half with the defense tightening up !

MVP - Alvinia Ow and Greg Somers - Scoring the only try of the second half a half break and diving endzone touchdown!

OMD Pukeko Mixed settled into a fun mixed round vs RP. It was a comedy or errors and slippery soapy balls being dropped left right and centre. Pukekos came out 14-0 ontop with the try and play of the game going to our star winger - Alvinia! Running hard off a flat ball from Penny, Alvinia dashed 35m to dive in and score in the corner with some hot defense chasing her!

MVP - Huffer - because he didnt drop the ball after his 50 m run down the sideline and dive for the tryline!

The much anticipated match up with UWC was met with much anticipation. That much was anticipated.

Dan Gernez aka RubberMan or Elastiboy continued on his spree of spectacular tries, two spring to mind, a superb round the corner sidestep by the sideline and another goose stutter step quarter field to stymie their rangy defender – both tries elicited in a trademark canter down the in goal area…lets see if he can keep up the pace for the rest of the seasons games!

Greg Mountain Somers was a stalwart on defence and came up with some superb gap running. I say we call him Mountain Gap. That’s his name. MG, good old gapper, the gap-meister, Mr Gap!

Moses did some great timed runs and was a contributor with calling out the defense…the site of his grey shirt was like a convict had escaped Changi and run on to play some touch!

Bus, after a pit stop in the bus station for the few weeks is now in the fast lane, this man is all about go forward, and not a step back!

The Muggers
Lee Xin otherwise known as Lee, or LX or Captain Ruck had a good game – sending a few choice passes out to his fellow muggers and some great dumping. Work needs to be done on his ruck defense though, the Muggers are the pukeko dobermen, so have to be the defenders of the team!

Wei Qiang, or affectionately know as the 3rd Mugger, the “sharpie” or M3 depending on your numerical ability, is climbing the steep learning curve, a few on the line defending faults marred what was otherwise a good all round game. The Pukeko team looks forward to his increased application of nous and initiative. His speed is there, his thoughts just need to catch up! J

Tony went in to do one of his extender dumps and then the defender went to do one of those no touch calls. But TK (also known as Tony-Baroni, the Singapore BA) was quicker and jetted the length of the field for a try.

Derelyn has the pukeko vote for person who proclaims injury status but takes the field regardless of her injuries…can someone say “arthritis in her old age”?

Alvinia had another sterling effort, with great communication and storming runs and defense. Her middle name is stalwart!

Mephine had a case of the dropsies but also some major runs down the field. She is the Mephinator.

A sterling effort saw the Pukekos Mixed prevail. Caw Caw!

Penny was a great communicator and managed to calm down Gap-man from getting too agitated. Her organisation and fluid runs was similar to Lindsay Chamberlains chase of the dingo!

Haseena was showing her old age as she was cramping up off the field, but this didn’t manifest on the field as her play and communication was a thing of wonder beheld by the Muggers!

Huffer, was a shadow of his former self as the poor dude was under the weather and suffering from the flu. However, we are happy to report that he was only knocked down in a vicious tackle once! Lets hope to keep him concussion-free for at least a month.

Jonesy got his first try of the season. The wily veteran also showed off the evil technique a few times as the Baddies mouthed off in frustration. Jonesy is the enforcer. Shiver in the shadow of Jonesy. Jonesy casts a long shadow. A cold, dark shadow. A shadow, where nothing can live.

Wei Yi, quiet in nature, but not in play, had some great plays, notably, styming the dogged attack of some attackers who just don’t learn.

Kim, with damaged and dislocated shoulders continued to play. She is tougher than tough! In fact if she were any tougher she would rust!

Chris Macnamara had another fine showing, as he ghosted between and betwixt players.

After a solid game, the Mens Pukekos managed to pull away from the baddies like taffy from the sidewalk. 8-5, not bad. A lot to improve, but a wins a win!

The team looks forward to the first game of Messrs Perkins and Ting, two more weapons to add to the Pukeko arsenal! Caw! Caw!

OMD Pukeko Mixed racked up 13 tries to 5 in their Bedok Kings game, while the OMD Pukeko mens team are starting to hit their straps with a 12-2 walloping of SSSV6. They currently sit in 2nd place on the league table and look to collect 3 more competition points for the weekend!

Pukeko Mens vs SixPack Men

The Pukekos took their first win of the summer league season against the hard running SixPack boys. Edging out a close 4-3 win the Pukekos played inspiring touch on attack, taking their opportunities as they came. SixPack lost their Captain, Leander early in the match and it proved to be the difference as they missed his organisation and decision making on the field.

The Pukekos fielded a full team with the return of the rubber man - Dan "rubber wheels" Gernez. Rookie Wei Qiang also debuted in this match with strong runs and solid defense. Young Dan collected two sweet tries supporting two dummy-half breaks and proving that being in the right place at the right time is a real talent!
Other tries were scored by Simon Gobbo on a quickie as he showed his sublime speed to outpace his marker to the line. Lixin scored his first try of the season on a slashing solo effort - showing a glimpse of his talent and pace.
Defense was tight on the line with sixpack making numerous line dives testing the agility of many Pukekos!

Pukekos move to 1 win and 1 loss as they look to climb their way up the table. The season is long and the benchmark has been set. See you in round 3! - Pukeko Out!

STL 2007 Round 1

We went down against the Bucks Mens 5-2. After Drawing with them early 2-2 just after half. The game could have gone anyway, if we had taken more care of our own possession. At times we were our own worst enemy. The 9 Pukekos that gutted, and grinded out the game in tricky conditions should hold there heads high, for the effort they put in. Im proud of that.
This is the attitude we should take to every game - to give it our best - blood and guts for the Pukeko Jersey.

We had a few opportunities to score with some close calls by the ref - touch and go - which we will finish off as the season progresses. We gotta get down and dirty and dive for that line.

Our two rookies Tony and Lixin had a tough debut into the STL but we look forward to good things from our super fast lads! With much talent, enthusiasm and agility it wont be long until they dominate the scene.

Look out for Round 2 when the Pukekos will be out for BLOOD!

Summer Touch League 2007

OMD Pukeko Touch look to defend their mixed Championship title of 2006 and also to retake the Mens Open title in 2007. The core of the team is back and looking solid! Not to mention an infusion of first-time Pukekos and Rookies joining the team.
Pre-season track training is done and dusted and the Summer League is scheduled to commence on the 24th February with the strongest competition in years.

Lycee Francais de Singapour Mixed Touch Invitational 2007

On Sunday February 11th, 2007 the Lycée Français de Singapour (http://www.lyceefrancais.edu.sg/) hosted an mixed invitational Touch Rugby tournament with 10 teams invited to take part.

The Pukeko's were drawn into a group containing representatives from United World College (UWC), Lycée Français parents and friends (Pastouche), Bucks and the Singapore Recreational Club (Barra 6ers).

The group games began slowly for the Pukeko's who fought out a 3-3 draw with the UWC team in the 9:10am timeslot. With several untried combinations and new team members joining the fray it was a game that stuttered more than flowed, but the team set their sites on rectifying this in the three remaining group matches. Adding to concerns was an early injury to Clifford Wong sustained in a collision with one of the UWC players.

Entering the second match against the Barra 6ers the Pukeko's team ended their team talk with a cry of 'FUN' which became the catch-cry for the remaining games. The Barra 6ers contained representatives from the SRC team who won the previous NTL tournament so a tough game was expected. Fortunately a quick start by the Pukeko's settled the nerves and a tight contest was avoided with the Pukeko's running our relatively comfortable winners 3-0. Wins in the other matches to improving Bucks and UWC teams however ensured that there still was a lot to play for in the upcoming group matches.

The third of the group games saw the Pukeko's hit their straps. Despite a slow start in the first few minutes they simply overpowered the Pastouche team with high intensity running and their constant drives deep into the opposition half. Of note in this game was the way that the girls contributed with structured dumps and splits showing the way which the guys were able to follow winning 10-1. (Ed- Tony getting stepped and scored on by a speedy 10 year old french lass, we think he liked her!) The Pastouche team deserved credit for their persistence against teams in their group who are regular STL members and certainly can hold their heads high for what they brought to the tournament. As for the Pukeko's, it was another hurdle crossed and all looked on track for the final group game against Bucks.

The final group game against Bucks had the potential to be difficult. The Bucks team had been playing some good football in their early group games and under the Singapore afternoon sun fatigue certainly was a potential factor in the game. Another quick start to the game by the Pukeko's however rendered all these factors mute as they setup the game in a similar manner to that against the Pastouche team - fast running and drives setting the platform for an impressive win 9-1. Other positives to come out of the game were strong runs by both rookies Tony and Lixin which showed they were starting to gel with the 'regular' Pukeko team members.

From the other side of the draw UWC and Bedok met to determine who would take up the first place in the final. Strong performances all day from both teams ensured a closely contested match and so it was with a 3-3 full time score meaning drop-off extra time followed. Chances to both teams in this period went missing but it was ultimately Bedok who pulled through with perhaps their experience proving the difference in the end; they now awaited to see who their opponents would be in the final.

In the other semi-final it was a matchup against Pukeko regular final opponents Bro-town, who were missing several key players. A closely contested start followed as the teams gave little away but towards the mid-way point a slightly more cohesive Pukeko's outfit pulled ahead and managed to stay there, seeing out the match with a solid win 4-1. Nerves were a noticeable factor within the Pukeko's side however with almost all of the team trying to do more with the ball than was required leading to erratic play, increased turnovers and ultimately a poor performance. They would need to get rid of these before the final if they were to be competitive; there Bedok lay waiting to capitalise on any such mistakes.

From the outset the final was not going to plan for the Pukeko's. The nervous energy displayed in the semi-final only increased at the start of this game and they were soon behind 2-1 to a Bedok team whose reliable football was laying the platform for a good win. At about the 10 minute mark the momentum changed. With Devon Wong leading the way his experience was to perhaps prove the difference as the team lifted on his back with a more solid platform being laid and correct options being taken in attack. Soon it was the Pukeko's in the ascendancy and once they drew level at 2-2 it was back to being anyones game. The Pukeko's finished the stronger however with two quick tries seeing out the match as they won their second invitational tournament in a row, following on from the one gained in the SRC tournament several weeks earlier. After a long day it was a good reward for a Pukeko's team that tried to enjoy their games along with playing to win.

Special thanks should go to the Lycée Français de Singapour for organising the event, the referees for their efforts on such a hot day and all the students who also gave their time to make the day a success. One special mention also goes out to Maureen and Hemi for their efforts without which the day would not have been the success that it was. At one point Mo refereed 5 games back to back and along with her other duties on the day it was a tremendous effort.

We can now all look forward to the start of the upcoming Singapore Summer Touch League where we can do it all over again!

OMD Pukeko STL Mixed Champions 2006

The Pukeko Mixed team defeated the Brotown mixed 7-5 in a hard fought final to take the championship for the Touch Singapore Summer Touch League 2006.
It was a muddy messy affair with the OMD Pukekos down at half 5-4.
But steel, experience, resolve and the heart of a champion shone through.
Congratulations to the team for a successful and UNDEFEATED campaign and we look forward to the NTL. The Ladies stepped up and showed their class as some of the best female players in Singapore.

In other games - a depleted and understrength OMD Pukeko Mens side went down to a fullforce Brotown team 10-3. Finishing as runner up for the first time since the competition began. The boys put in a proud effort with only 3 substitutes and without 3 of their key players. The rematch looks like one to be watched- with the series tally going 1-1 as OMD Pukeko defeated Bro-town in the roundrobin series.

Greg reminds us about our boy "Orangecone" - That player 'orange cone' in the 2005 pic- he was the best!! He always stayed out on the wing- but was pretty crap at passing and catching.

A quote from Moses - "Yeah, I remember having to mark him out wide when I was playing for Bedok, it always seemed like you guys had an extra man on the pitch, I could never really figure out why."

Anyway good old Orangecone moved on from Singapore to take up a posting in the Big Apple, New York. He sent us a photo recently of him and his mates on the streets of New York. Nice one Oc.

STL Match Report Round 7

Mens Open

OMD Pukekos faced off in a top of the table clash with the young SRC six pack lads. The game was fast paced and full of intensity. Great spirit showed by both teams however OMD Pukeko struck first with an easy draw and pass play on a lazy winger - Dr Somers making the perfect scoring pass to the Bowser to open the account. The OMD Pukekos were fired up for this one ! Some big hits were involved and hard touches effected where the ref had to send off one of the six pack...

A few rushed chances by the Pukies were taken on the line and opportunities werent quite finished off with a few loose passes going to ground. However , with tough flying defence in the face of the opposition and pressure counting against the six packs - Captain Cliff made a second sweet pass to Mo on the wing to score a huge try at the midway point of the 1st half.

The 3rd try came from a hard drag-dump and split from Dev and the Doctor swooping in to shoot from half and find Dev back on the cut for a sweet diving try and a 3 - 0 lead.

2nd half found OMD Pukekos up 3-1 and the final score would be 5-3 with great defense throughout the 2nd half and both teams running to a standstill. Danny boy made a huge intercept to keep the foot on the throat and run 70m for a big try.

The entire team had a well focused effort and they prepare for a 1 vs 2 match up against Bro-town in the coming weeks. Big contributions from Bus, Timmy, Jonesy with the driving platform.

Man of the match award : Greg Somers (Thankfully there were no old men on the opposition team as they normally chase him down.)

About Us - Pukeko Touch

Pukeko Touch is a Singapore based touch football club with a focus on competitive touch.

The Pukekos were born in 2005 and stamped their name in the history books by winning the 2005 touch singapore (www.touchsingapore.org) Summer Touch League Mens Open division.

In 2006, the Pukekos have expanded to two teams; A mens open team and a Mixed team which compete in the Summer Touch League 2006.

We train hard and play hard just like any other sports team and some might say we take our sports a little more seriously than others - we say its just that much more fun that way !
